Fitra, also known as Zakat al-Fitr or Fitrana, is a compulsory form of charity due from every Muslim at the conclusion of the holy month of Ramadan. It is payable by the head of a household on behalf of themselves and every dependent — including children, spouses, and elderly parents — under their care.
Unlike Zakat, Fitra is not calculated on wealth. It is a fixed amount per person, equivalent to the cost of one meal, and must be given before the Eid al-Fitr prayer. Its purpose is to purify the fasting person from any shortcomings during Ramadan and to enable the poor to celebrate Eid with joy.
BRDT collects Fitra donations and distributes food parcels and cash assistance to the poorest families in rural Bangladesh before Eid, so they can celebrate with happiness and dignity.
Understand the simple process of paying your Fitra and how it transforms lives before Eid.
Include yourself, your spouse, children, and any other dependants you financially support. Multiply ৳500 per person to find your total Fitra amount. Pay before the Eid prayer for it to be valid.
BRDT converts your Fitra into essential food parcels — rice, lentils, oil, and flour — distributed to the poorest families in rural Bangladesh before Eid morning, ensuring no one fasts on the day of celebration.
Your Fitra brings the joy of Eid to families who cannot afford to celebrate. It purifies your Ramadan fast, fulfils your obligation to Allah, and ensures the entire community — rich and poor alike — can rejoice on Eid day.
Everything you need to know about paying your Fitra.
Fitra must be paid before the Eid al-Fitr prayer. Many scholars recommend giving it in the last days of Ramadan so it can be distributed to the poor before Eid morning. It can also be paid at the beginning of Ramadan to give administrators more time for distribution.
Every Muslim who possesses more than their basic needs must pay Fitra for themselves and all their dependants. The head of household pays on behalf of their spouse, children, and any other dependants. Unlike Zakat, there is no Nisab threshold — it is obligatory on all Muslims who have food for that day and night.
Fitra is equivalent to one Sa' (approximately 2.5kg) of staple food such as wheat, barley, dates, or rice per person. In monetary terms, BRDT estimates this at approximately £7 per person, though this may vary. Check with your local Islamic authority for the most current rate.
Yes. When donating, simply enter the total amount for all members of your household. For example, if there are 4 people in your family, enter £28.00 (4 × £7). BRDT will distribute this as food aid to families in need.
Thanks to the generosity of donors like you, BRDT has been able to distribute Fitra food parcels to thousands of families in rural Bangladesh. No family should go hungry on the day of Eid — your Fitra makes that possible.
Every penny of your Fitra goes directly to feeding families in Bangladesh. BRDT's 100% Donation Policy guarantees zero deductions for administration or overheads.
